Congratulations to WP on their Historic Victory in Aljunied GRC

Dear Mr. Low Thia Khiang,

The Reform Party and I extend our warmest congratulations to the Workers’ Party and its Aljunied team of yourself, Ms. Sylvia Lim, Mr. Chen Show Mao, Mr. Pritam Singh and Mr. Mohammed Faisal Bin Abdul Manap on achieving an historic win in GE 2011. By your victory you have demonstrated that the GRC system is no longer invulnerable and brought Singapore one step closer to a pluralistic democracy. We also extend our congratulations to Mr. Yaw Shin Leong on retaining your former Hougang seat with an increased majority.

It would be taking nothing away from your achievement to say that your victory built upon the creditable performance of the WP Aljunied team led by Ms. Sylvia Lim in 2006. Before that there was the example of the WP team in Cheng San in 1997 led by the then SG and subsequent founder of the Reform Party, Mr. J. B. Jeyaretnam, which came closest to capturing a GRC in recent times.

Despite the length of time that it has taken and the formidable obstacles, you have finally achieved what my late father set out to achieve in 1997 and shattered the myth of the GRC system.
